Movie Review: Transformers – Revenge of the Fallen

My Rating: 3Stars

This evening I saw the movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at Grand Cinema, Elements, West Kowloon, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

Before I went to see this movie I avoided all the trailers on TV and at the cinemas, because there were more than the usual number of trailers I did not want to see all the actions from the movie. Luck I did as I was told from others who had watched the trailers, they were the key scenes from each of the action sequences.

Movie Review: Star Trek (2009)

My Rating: 5Stars

Last night I saw the movie Star Trek at UA Cinema, Time Square, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

It has been 7 years since the last Star Trek movie release in the theater. The last was Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002 with the newest crew of the Enterprise led by captain Jean-Luc Picard.

The latest movie of the Star Trek franchise is a prequel to the crew from the original Star Trek TV series: James T. KirkSpockBonesUhuraMontgomery Scott and Sulu first aired 44 years ago. The movie set started before captain James T. Kirk was born quickly skip through his childhood and to the moment he enlist into Star Fleet.

Movie Review: Terminator Salvation

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I saw the movie Terminator Salvation at UA Cinema, Time Square, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

It has been six years since the last movie in the Terminator franchise, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) and 25 years since the first movie, The Terminator (1984). Each of the movies in the franchise had mentions of John Connor; this time played by Christian Bale. This movie gave us, the audience, a refreshing in-depth look at the story of John Connor and the life on Earth (the year 2018) during the machine up rising for the first time.

Movie Review: Defiance

Poster

My Rating: 4Stars

This evening I saw the movie Defiance at AMC Theater, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

The movie is a true story of “Tuvia Bielski“, played by Daniel Craig, in Poland during World War II. Tuvia the eldest of four brothers was forced to take care of each other after their village was attacked and their parents killed by Polish police who were rounding up Jews for the German army.

Determine for revenge the second eldest of the brothers, Zus, was determined to fight the Germans and decided to lead a faction to join the Russian partisans after his wife and kid was murdered by the Germans.

I did not really like Craig as James Bond in Quantum of Solace last year, but in this movie he delivered a believable performance portraying Tuvia. There were the right amount of fighting for a war movie, while there were characters and stories to the plot for the audiences to focus on and become immerse into the movie. It passed my forget-where-I-was test, which usually means that the performance and plot of the movie successfully took me away to the setting of the movie.

If you are a fan of Craig, this is a must see. If you are a World War II history buff you will be reasonably entertained.

Movie Review: The Beast Stalker

Poster

My Rating: 5Stars

This evening I saw the movie The Beast Stalker at UA Cinema, TimeSquare, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Another late addition to my Must See Movies list.

This was only my second movie (on the big screen) in over 3 weeks. Those who knows me will find this extremely unusual, as some of them say I watch almost anything. Although I disagree, but I used to watch on average 2 – 3 movies a week. That was before I returned to Hong Kong over 10 years ago, now one movie a week was typical. The reason for this recent hiatus was quite simple, I found there were nothing interesting enough to watch.

Until I came across a review of this movie in HK Magazine (Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 issue), which gave it high praises. It had been years since I last watched a Hong Kong made movie and there is really nothing American to watch at the theaters, I decided to give it a try.

Movie Review: 証人

Poster

My Rating: 5Stars

Another late addition in Vinko’s Must See Movies list.

Movie Review: Eagle Eye

Poster

My Rating: 4Stars

This evening I saw the movie Eagle Eye at AMC Theater, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong.

Another highly anticipated movie from my Must See Movies list.

Another great movie with exciting special effects and spectacular stunts. The kind you expects from Die Hard franchise and more recently in Wanted. These recent movies has really raise the bar for all action movies to come.

The casting was almost perfect except for Michael Chiklis, which I just cannot rid him of his character, “Detective Vic Mackey” from The Shield. It is most likely the choice of the director, D.J. Caruso, who chose Chiklis for the Defense Secretary role.

The plot of this movie is not totally original, with The Terminator and WarGames both using the same theme. To avoid ruin the movie for my readers I will not review too much of the plot, which is reviewed half way into the movie.

Overall the dialogue is fairly weak particularly Chiklis’ character. The only memorable one was from Billy Bob Thornton where he turns to his team and say, “I hope you are all staring at me because I am the major suspect, if I don’t get some significant leads I will demote everyone of you to jobs that require direct contact of feces.”

If you enjoy action movies and a technology buff, this is definitely a movie not to miss.

Movie Review: Bangkok Dangerous (2008)

Poster

My Rating: 3Stars

This evening I saw the movie Bangkok Dangerous at AMC Theater, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong.

Not one of Nicolas Cage‘s better movies. He has some fairly bad ones lately, like Ghost Rider, The Wicker Man and The Weather Man just to name a few. Cage really shows his age in this movie and the type of characters he normally plays in movies like National Treasure are not longer believable.

There are really no one who can do it like Sean Connery and still plays an action hero well into his late 50s. Actors like Nicolas Cage should be more careful in choosing characters where he can play a more believable character.

You will come out of this movie feeling unfulfilled and cheated of 100 minutes of your time. So, if you are a fan of Nicolas Cage try to rent it from iTunes when it becomes available, otherwise choose  something else.

Movie Review: Get Smart

Poster

My Rating: 4Stars

This evening I saw the movie “Get Smart” at AMC Theater, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong.

It was not one of the movies very high up on my Must See Movies list, but since there was a typhoon in Hong Kong and there was nothing else to watch other than the 2008 Olympic games
on TV.

I was presently surprised by the movie, particularly Steve Carell of the Almighty franchise: Evan Almighty and Bruce Almighty fame. He played the character Maxwell Smart very well, giving it the same style that Don Adams made famous, Mel Brooks created in the TV Show of the same name from the late 60s. I believe Carell’s performance would have made Adams proud if he was alive.

Of course talking about Maxwell Smart, aka Agent 86, one cannot forget his partner, Agent 99, in this movie played by Anne Hathaway. Who did a great job in bring the character that Barbara Feldon had made famous from the 60s TV show.

All in all, for the Get Smart fans, I believe this is a good tribute to the 60s character. The writers, Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember had set up the movie to have the potential to become yet another franchise if the box offices show good results.
