This evening I saw the movie Quantum of Solace at Broadway Cinemas, IFC Mall, Central, Hong Kong.
I never liked Daniel Craig as James Bond, the last was Casino Royale in 2006, but recently a friend suggested that most people did not see how Craig is trying to play an early version of James Bond. So before I went into this movie at 23:55 I kept this in mind.
Low and behold, right off the bat James Bond is in a car chase with his Austin Martin, getting it shot up, door ripped off and the hold side of the car damaged. Unlike most other James Bond movies where his car, particularly the Austin Martin would be in pristine conditions during and after a car chase.
Craig’s version of James Bond gets hurt each time he fights, gets all emotional, not able to control his temper, his clothes all messed up during a fight and bleeds a lot. In one scene he even smashes his head on a table while jumping from one building over to the balcony of another. Something you would never see in other James Bond movies.
I definitely suggest you keep the above in mind before and during the movie, you will then realize how good a job Craig did in playing the early version of James Bond.
Of course, a James Bond movie is never truly a James Bond movie without the bond girls, but this time there was only one, “Strawberry Fields”. The female lead did not get the typical Bond girl name, but a boring, “Camille”. Also, in this movie Bond did not get the girl; at least not the lead.
All in all, this movie has enough action to justify it as a Bond movie and I now have a greater appreciation of Craig’s role as the early James Bond. Overall, it deserves the 4 penguins rating I’d given it.
