Movie Review: Open Water (2004)

My Rating: 1Stars

Yesterday afternoon I went to see the movie “Open Water” at AMC, Festival Walk.

It is my duty to inform you of this movie.

I did not plan to go see this movie, and it did not make it onto my “Must See Movies” list. To tell you the truth this was not the kind of movies I would have gone to see on my own accord, and I was proven correct.

The director of the movie attempted to create the “true story documentary” cinematography, even the playwright carried this approach. Hence, the actors’ dialogue were quite cheesy.

What else can I say? This definitely a low budget film with low budget actors, and you can spend your money on a meal at McDonald’s instead.

My Rating: 2Stars

Yesterday afternoon I went to see the movie “The Village” at Broadway Cinema, Olympian Plaza.

I did not plan to go see this movie, and it did not make it onto my “Must See Movies” list. To tell you the truth this was not the kind of movies I would have gone to see on my own accord, but I was presently surprise.

Actually, “surprise” is what this movie is all about. But then what would you expect for a movie coming from the director, M. Night Shyamalan, who also directed: “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable“.

If I tell you any more I will ruin the whole plot for you. Like the other two movies by Shyamalan, you should avoid hearing any more about it before watching the movie yourself.

Movie Review: Man on Fire (2004)

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I went to see the movie “Man on Fire” at AMC, Festival Walk. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

This is a remake of the original movie back in 1987, staring Scott Glenn. Majority of the movie had me capsulated but unfortunately I was still distracted by celluar phones going off.

Denzel Washington did a very good job, playing a character which he played many times before in other movies.

The ending is a bit disappointing and unlike the 1987 version. If I tell you any more I will give away the plot.

Movie Review: Garfield the Movie (2004)

Poster

My Rating: 3Stars

This afternoon I went to see the movie “Garfield the Movie” at AMC, Festival Walk.

I watched the cartoon when I was young and had a “love & hate” relationship with Garfield. I always thought of Garfield’s character as a fat, lazy and sarcastic cat. This movie tried very hard to maintain that stereotype created by the cartoon, but failed in many ways.

If I was the casting director I would cast Jack Nicholson rather than Bill Murray as the voice of Garfield. In Hong Kong, for the Cantonese version, they chose a perfect actor, “Lau Ching Wan”, for Garfield’s voice. Of all the actors in Hong Kong, if someone was to ask me who reminds me of Garfield the most, I would say “Lau Ching Wan”. This is not because Lau Ching Wan is one of my favorite Hong Kong actor. Some of the other great movies that Lau Ching Wan had stared in that I would recommend are “Running Out of Time” and “Running Out of Time 2“.

May be I need to see the Cantonese version to like this movie. I guess that will have to wait if and when I purchase the DVD.

Movie Review: Bourne Supremacy (2004)

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I went to see the movie “Bourne Supremacy” at Broadway Cinema, Olympian Plaza. Another late addition to my Must See Movies list.

This is the 3rd sequel I’ve seen this year after “Spider-man 2” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, and I must say this one did live up to its predecessor. It had the numerous chase scenes that was prevalent in the previous movie “Bourne Identity”.

If I say any more I will just give away the movie for you, just go watch it and see it for yourself. One thing I can tell you, they set it up so that there may be a possible 3rd version in the sequel.

Movie Review: I, Robot (2004)

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I went to see the movie “I, Robot” at Broadway Cinema, Olympian Plaza. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

The plot of the movie is nothing too original, matter affect it is very familiar to me. I did not read the book by “Issac Asimov”, but then I never do before a movie accept for the “Harry Potter” series. Of course Will Smith helped a lot in keeping the movie interesting.

The special effect is quite impressive, most of technologies used in the movie are very believable and possible. I have noticed recently in the past few science fiction movies; the technologies appeared in the movie are all very possible and some of them I can imagine seeing in the next few year. This shows a great deal of research were done by the set designers.

This is the first time Product Placement is done, where the manufacture designed the product especially for the movie, rather than placing a product that the manufacture is currently selling. Audi spent a year creating all the vehicles in the movie after studying the script and characters of the movie.

Movie Review: The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)

My Rating: 3Stars

This evening I went to see the movie “The Chronicles of Riddick” at AMC Cinema, Festival Walk, Kowloon Tong.

Vin Diesel did his usual level of acting, not great but also not bad. I did not like the director having the actors describe some of the scenes and actions, I think he could have let the audience discover or let the story line review itself a bit more. Some part of the story sounded like it is trying to set the audience up for a sequel, but did not do it so obvious that they have to commit to it. I guess even the movie makers themselves are not certain if this movie will be a success. Given the amount of audiences at the theatre I was in, it is doing okay, but then this is only the third day of its release in Hong Kong.

This movie reminds me of the movie “Dune” of yesteryear.

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

My Rating: 5Stars

This afternoon I went to see the movie “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” at Broadway Cinema, Olympian Plaza.

Yesterday, I said “Spider-man 2” was one of the best sequel I’ve seen since “Bad Boys II“, and today I have another one. This follow up to the Harry Potter series is very well made. The details of the set, costumes and the various different gadgets that one reads about in J.K. Rowling’s book were magnificently reproduced to the finest details. I truly like to compliment the set designers, visual effect producer, and CGI artists. Their efforts really had the ability to fully capture your attention and to mesmerize.

Before watching the movie I was going to reread the book, believing that I would enjoy it more, because it was my experience with the first and second movie. Unfortunately, I did not get around to it, but was still able to enjoy the movie. I believe it was because I still remember the book from before. So if you had not read the book before, try to read it first before going to the movie, you will enjoy the efforts of the movie makers much more.

Movie Review: Spider-man 2 (2004)

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I went to see the movie “Spiderman 2” at Broadway Cinema, Olympian Plaza. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

This is a good sequel to the Spiderman trilogy, and the title of “good sequel” is not easily awarded to just any movie on my scale . The last good sequel I saw was “Bad Boys II“.

In this version of the Spiderman trilogy it used an unique method of bringing the audience up to date on what happened in the previous episode. This time the characters are more developed, the acting is more mature and overall better. I guess this may be contributed to the actors themselves being more mature and experienced.

I find that it has the right balance of action and drama to be a good movie in my books. Unfortunately, it was not enough to capture the audiences around me at the theatre so that I can enjoy the movie, and it did not help things for many of them to be kids. Now this brings up a good point to mention, especially for those who will be taking their kids to this movie. In my opinion this is not a kids movie, it has too much drama and dialogue to keep those young adults in their seats for the 2 hours and 7 minutes of the movie.

BTW: if this episode is not enough for you Spiderman addicts… there will be a third.

Movie Review: Troy (2004)

Poster

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I went and saw the movie “Troy” at Broadway Cinema, Olympian Plaza. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

The acting in the movie was okay. The casting was good, they were all the actors one would expect to see for these roles.

One of the best part of this movie are the hidden special effects they used to film the movie. Movie makers had come a long was since the “Lawrence of Arabia” days where they need to hire hundreds of extras for the movie battle scenes.

The story of the movie is well know by all who watch this movie, although the screen writes did a fairly good job in leading the audience to each of the events in the story.

The movie was considered long with its published running time of 164 minutes. I am not sure whether it was the fault of the movie that could not capture me through out the length of the movie, or was it the numerous cell phones that ran and the massive number of people that constantly got out of their seats near the 2 hour mark; washroom breaks or what have you.

Everyone should have known that this to be a long movie, they should be more considerate and gone to the washroom prior to the movie. But then again this is Hong Kong, I may be asking too much for people to be considerate; especially in a movie theatre. That’s another blog to be continued later.

Do everyone else a favor, please remember it is a 2 hours and 44 minutes movie.
