Movie Review: Iron Man 2

Poster

My Rating: 3Stars

This afternoon I saw the movie Iron Man 2 at AMC Cinemas, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong. One of the movies from my Must See Movies

Many people criticized the movie as not being as good as the previous episode in the sequel, Iron Man. These people did not like the “Tony Stark” character played by Robert Downey Jr. for trying too hard to be funny. Nor did they like the fact that the casting directors: Sarah Finn and Randi Hiller, changed the actor who played “Lt. Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes” from Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle. The decision might had been from Howard himself, as he was starting in a new movie Red Tails.

I personally liked the Tony Stark that Downey portrayed. A bit egocentric, a bit arrogant and dare devil. Something that Downey plays very well as he did in Sherlock Holmes and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Someone who stood out in this movie was Mickey Rourke who played a great villain, as he did in The Informers, Domino, Sin City, Rumble Fish and many more. I just wished his character did not die so easily.

The story of this movie was a lot weaker compared to the first movie, may be this was due to the fact that the audience no longer had to be told the Iron Man story. The writers did try to introduce some moments of reminiscing for Tony Stark’s childhood, but the plot was too weak and not captivating. The reintroduction of Samuel L. Jackson‘s character “Nick Fury” and Clark Gregg’s character “Agent Coulson” felt half done and kept the audience wanting more. For those who did not see the first Iron Man movie will had no idea where these people came from and why they were helping Tony Stark.

Not to mention unbelievable character “Natalie Rushman / Natasha Romanoff” played by Scarlett Johansson. Natalie reminds me of the other heroine “Æon Flux” from the movie of the same name. May be Marvel was planning another action movie with the “Natalie” character, like they gave Tony Stark a guest appearance in The Incredible Hulk (2008).

After watching the movie I felt the writers and editors were trying to keep the movie within 2 hours I think this movie was entertaining for an afternoon out, but it lacked the interesting twists in the plot to justify the extra “penguin” in my rating.

  1. I am kind of agree what you've said about the movie. Actually the story line is good, it wants to show the audience more about the inner feeling of Tony, how does he feels about his life is going to end soon and what does he do about it. However, when I watched the movie, it couldn't give a strong impact on me compared with the first movie. Beside that, for the character, Natalie, she is very cool and powerful, especially during the fighting part, though a bit exaggerated, I liked her moves. For the crazy bad guy, I thought they would have a real serious fight at the end, but quite disappointed me, it ended so quick.

  2. I love Iron Man!! Robert Downey Jr. is charming and endearing and made me love this movie! Normally I'm not a comic book fan, usually I go for more dramatic stuff like the movie Cycle (http://www.myspace.com/cyclethemovie), but because of the Downey I'm a convert and loving it!! Though Scarlette Jo has got to go I just find her annoying.
