Movie Review: Spider-man 3

Poster

My Rating: 3Stars

This evening I saw the movie “Spider-man 3” at JP Theater, Causeway Bay.

I was disappointed. I guess it has to do with “Tobey Maguire“, he is someone easily hated. Given he plays the hero, Spider-man, of the movie that is not a good thing. Plus, I never thought “Kirsten Dunst” to be cast correctly as the heroine. I saw them when they were much younger in the first Spider-man, unlike the actors in movie “Harry Potter”, these two did not improve over time.

The supporting actors in the movie were much better, and their humorous scenes saved the movie for me. Many of the kids in the audience were not captured by the actions in the movie or the lack of action. The movie was way too long, at many spots it feels like it was dragging on too long.

Movie Review: Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy

My Rating: 3Stars

Tonight I went to see the movie “Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy” at Broadway Theater, Olympian City. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

Well if you are a true fan of Douglas Adams‘ (1952-2001) book “Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy” or the British TV/Radio series of the same name, then you will appreciate this movie. Although I have seen the BBC TV series and had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Adams speak at an Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (1990), I did not find this movie that interesting.

I can tell you that Mr. Adams does speak the way his book is written. Listening to him is like serving the Internet; going from one topic to another as he touch upon each during the progress of the conversation. In a way it is like the way I have conversation with people.

The international version of the official web site is very cool.

Movie Review: Polar Express, The

My Rating: 4Stars

This evening I went to see the movie “The Polar Express” at Broadway Cinema, Olympian Plaza. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

In a single word “Amazing”.

Amazing acting by Tom Hanks. Amazing animation. Although, the movie’s story line is a bit simple, for someone who enjoy CG (Computer Graphics), this is definitely a movie to keep in ones collection when it comes out on DVD.

The many characters that Tom Hanks played in the movie are all animated using direct motion mapping. Where Hanks wears a suite with placement markers and the computer scans and monitors every facial and body movements translating this back to computer models for the characters. This is definitely a revolution in movie making. It also showcases Hanks incredible acting (role playing).

Movie Review: The Stepford Wives (2004)

My Rating: 3Stars

This afternoon I went to see the movie “The Stepford Wives ” at Broadway Cinema, Olympian City. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

I don’t know about you but I personally still cannot comfortably accept Matthew Broderick in any mature adult character. If you’re as old as I am, you will remember Broderick in his most famous role “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off“. In Stepford Wives Broderick plays Nicole Kidman’s character’s husband.

Stepford Wives is a movie with a subject matter that not many other movies had ever touched on. That is “the man behind the woman” idea. I do enjoy Ira Levin’s idea. Although I have not seen the 1975 version of the movie I do enjoy Paul Rudnick’s version of it for the screen.

The casting for this movie was perfect. Kidman had always been seen as a powerful woman (“Eyes Wide Shut“, “Birthday Girl“). I guess may be the casting director also have the same stereotyping for Broderick, in that case may be Broderick is the perfect cast for the role of “Walter Kresby”.

This is also one of the few movies with the most name-brand-dropping. Rudnick plays on the stereotypes of these brand names to enhance the characters they represents. One questionable mention was Microsoft. I wonder whether Apple Computers paid for the brand placement or was it done free by the studio.

Movie Review: Troy (2004)

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I went and saw the movie “Troy” at Broadway Cinema, Olympian Plaza. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

The acting in the movie was okay. The casting was good, they were all the actors one would expect to see for these roles.

One of the best part of this movie are the hidden special effects they used to film the movie. Movie makers had come a long was since the “Lawrence of Arabia” days where they need to hire hundreds of extras for the movie battle scenes.

The story of the movie is well know by all who watch this movie, although the screen writes did a fairly good job in leading the audience to each of the events in the story.

The movie was considered long with its published running time of 164 minutes. I am not sure whether it was the fault of the movie that could not capture me through out the length of the movie, or was it the numerous cell phones that ran and the massive number of people that constantly got out of their seats near the 2 hour mark; washroom breaks or what have you.

Everyone should have known that this to be a long movie, they should be more considerate and gone to the washroom prior to the movie. But then again this is Hong Kong, I may be asking too much for people to be considerate; especially in a movie theatre. That’s another blog to be continued later.

Do everyone else a favor, please remember it is a 2 hours and 44 minutes movie.
