Why Frequent Travelers Still Pick the Earliest Flight

I’ve been booking the first flight of the day out of Macau and Hong Kong for years.

Not because I like 5am. Because I like landing when I said I would.

Someone on X put it plainly this week. The first flight is money. Less crowds. The plane can’t be delayed inbound. The crew is already on site. A weekly work traveler piled on: this guy gets it. Absolutely right.

Yes. That’s the whole point.

The plane already slept there

On the early bank, the aircraft usually overnighted at your airport. It isn’t waiting on a late inbound from somewhere else. Yesterday’s delays get wiped overnight. Weather that stacked up in the afternoon often clears. The terminal is still half quiet. Security moves. The gate isn’t a hallway full of people yet.

One reply said it the way frequent flyers say it: the plane is on time, the cabin crew is fresh, and a lot of the seats are filled with people who do this for work. In places with a curfew, that first pushback can sit around 6am. The alarm hurts. The odds are better.

That’s it. Reliability. Not a lifestyle.

Why it matters on MFM and HKG

I fly out of Macau (MFM) and Hong Kong (HKG) a lot — MFM to Narita is the kind of hop where the clock matters. On those routes, a missed connection or a late inbound isn’t a cute story. It’s the day gone.

So when the schedule offers an early bank, I take it. Same instinct as why we never stack four countries in five days: fewer moving parts. Fewer ways for someone else’s delay to become mine. Same reason two nights in Cairo on the way somewhere else beat a stack of airports — the day has to work.

Early also leaves room on the other end. A mechanical or a slow taxi still hurts. It hurts less at 7am than it does at 9pm. You’ve got hours left to salvage the day. A late departure that slips another two hours can wipe the evening. An early one that slips still often lands before lunch.

I’ve written before about what makes a long-haul flight actually good — and when a long seat stops feeling extravagant — landing like a person so day one is a real day. This is the other half of that habit, before you even board. Show up when the system is least messy.

The lounge is not why

I’m not getting up early for the lounge.

At MFM and HKG, most lounges I’ve used aren’t that good. Plaza Premium First at the Macau airport is fine — a chair, a buffet, noodles if you want them. Not special. Centurion at HKIA? My first time there, and I was not impressed. I’ve already written whether airport lounges are still worth it — same blunt take.

The lounges people praise at those airports are Cathay’s. I don’t fly Cathay. So I’m not going to pitch that lounge, and I’m not building a morning around it.

The early bank is the plane already being here. The lounge is optional filler while you wait. On a good day it’s quiet. On a bad day it’s mediocre food and a clock. Either way, the point is pushback.

What I am not saying

I do not love the dark terminal and the sad sandwich. I’ll take both over a perfect pastry and a rolling delay.

And I’m not saying every trip needs the 6am. Leisure, no connection, nowhere to be until dinner? Take the noon flight and sleep. I’m talking about the days when showing up matters more than sleeping in.

Later flights can be fine. Plenty of them are. When the trip matters — a meeting, a tight connection, a short stay where I can’t afford to lose the morning — I still look at the first departure first.

The plane slept there. The crew showed up. The airport isn’t full yet.

That’s enough for me.

Stay tuned… still taking the early bank when the day has to work.
