Wagyu Tataki Over Rice at Idaten, Near Dotonbori
There’s a 30-second clip going around. A chef cuts a deep-red block of wagyu, sears it over charcoal, slices it thin and lays it over rice in a gold box. Egg yolk. Uni. Ikura. The caption just says “near Dotonbori.”
The shop is Idaten — 匠のお重 和牛 韋駄天 — on the second floor of the Kakou Building at 1-8-20 Namba. Their site says two minutes on foot from Namba Station on the Midosuji line. Tabelog says one minute from Exit 14. Either way, close. Tabelog files it under Namba and Dotonbori.
I’ve done Osaka a few times. Udon I still rate as one of the best. Yakiniku up in Fukushima. A lot of walking. Idaten only opened in July 2023, and I haven’t been. It’s on the list now.

The box to order is the Osaka Tataki-ju. The meat is uchihira, from the round, cut from A5 female cattle. On the Japanese menu it’s ¥2,430 for 100 g or ¥3,645 for 150 g, tax in. The English menu says ¥2,580, so check at the counter. At this week’s rate that’s roughly CA$22 to CA$33. If you think in Alberta AAA steakhouse terms, that’s a low entry price for A5.
The one in the video is the Idaten-ju: the same tataki with uni and soy-marinated ikura on top, ¥6,180. About CA$56.
Small correction to the clip. “A5 Tadaki” isn’t a brand. Tataki is the method — sear the outside hard, keep the inside rare, slice thin. And it comes in a jū, a lidded box, not a bowl.

Why I want it: round is lean. Wagyu fat is what makes a lean cut worth eating — same reason a fillet winning made sense to me in my Queensland wagyu piece.
Honest bit. Tataki is rarer than I’d order a steak. The middle in that clip is properly red. What sells it is the charred edge — a crust in miniature — over warm rice and the house sauce. There’s also a “Light Grill” tataki-ju at ¥2,580, made with their own Daikoku Sen-gyu beef instead of the A5. I’d ask what that means for doneness before choosing.
The logistics matter more than the menu here:
- No reservations. Numbered tickets go out in order of arrival.
- Tickets start around 10:50 for lunch and 16:00 for dinner, per Tabelog.
- Hours: 11:30–14:30 and 17:00–21:30, last orders 30 minutes before close.
- Closed Mondays, open if Monday is a holiday. Tabelog also says they’re often closed Tuesdays — check their Instagram, @wagyu_idaten.
- 23 seats, ten at the counter. Counter, obviously.

Tip: show up for the ticket handout, not for opening time. Then go walk the canal until your number comes up.
