3G in Hong Kong

For those of you who do not know what is 3G, please allow me to give you a simple explaination.

The symbol “3G” stands for “third generation”. It is the 3rd generation of the modern cellular phone technology development. At the present time most of the world’s carriers have already upgraded their cellular technologies to 2.5G.

3G, as it is known, will allow its subscribers fast video quality data transfer either between cellular handsets or between handsets and content providers. With the arrival of 3G technology the types of services available on cellular handsets will greatly increase.

The Japanese telecom providers are already experimenting with 4G and 5G technologies.

Has 3G technology become mature enough to be offered in Hong Kong?

Well this should have been the question asked by the carriers offering this service to the public.

Recently 3 HK launched 3G service to the Hong Kong public, but the services offered are really not for the average subscribers. The handset itself is ugly (personal opinion of course) and expensive. It is not until now, almost one month later, that 3 HK began to offer a less expensive handset to its subscirbers.

Design is an important aspect for new technology adoption. Why doesn’t 3 HK take a lesson from NTT DoCoMo? DoCoMo just launched a new line of 3G phones 900i series, and it has been a great success.

Video Conference

Has video conferencing or Video Chat arrive at the desktop of the average home computer user?

I cannot say that I am a typical home computer user, since I enjoy technology and do my best to stay up to date with them.

Below is a picture of me (in my apartment in Hong Kong) talking to my friend (Mark) at his office in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, using Apple’s iChatAV and our Firewire iSight webcams.

iChat Screen Shot

This scene is becoming common among Mac users since Apple’s introduction of iSight and iChatAV. Now Apple’s latest version of iChatAv also allows Mac users (with .Mac accounts) to video chat with AOL users too.

To Remember

Again it has been a while since I made an entry into this weblog.

Holocaust like the one that happened to the Jews is something that should never happen again.

Almost everyone agrees with the above statement, but we still see it in Eastern Europe, Middle East and ASEAN countries.

Why is there so much hatred in the world?

To ignore is to condone. To be ignorant is to allow our mistakes to be repeated.

Real Estate Agent Game

In Hong Kong whenever a real estate developer sets up a showroom for a new residential property, real estate agents from various agencies would hover around to ask every passerby if they would be interested to look at the property. This in itself is a very annoying thing for the passersby.

While walking in a mall in Hong Kong I saw something that one would only see in Hong Kong.

Real Estate #1Real Estate #2Real Estate #3

As you can see, like I described previously, there is a bunch of real estate agents hovering around a property showroom.

One thing even I haven’t seen before are the boundary lines laid across the floor to mark the area where real estate agents must stay behind.

This is just like a sports court where lines mark areas that are out of bounds. Funny… eh?

Where is My Seat?

I don’t know whether you’ve been to a Chinese restaurant during the busy hours. If you have you will know what I am about to describe.

The most congested place at a Chinese restaurant is at the hostess’ podium. People usually crowd around the podium waiting for a table, as you can see from the photo below.

Hostess Podium

People do not just wait around quietly for their number to be called. For some reason they seem to have the need to constantly hover over the hostess to find out exactly, minute by the minute, how many people are ahead of them on the wait list.

It is not as if the hostess does not announce the current number. The people who wait have a constant need to look over the hostess’ shoulder to find out their place on the wait list.

What is the reasoning behind this phenomenon? Your guess is as good as mine.
