Movie Review: Terminator Salvation

Poster

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I saw the movie Terminator Salvation at UA Cinema, Time Square, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

It has been six years since the last movie in the Terminator franchise, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) and 25 years since the first movie, The Terminator (1984). Each of the movies in the franchise had mentions of John Connor; this time played by Christian Bale. This movie gave us, the audience, a refreshing in-depth look at the story of John Connor and the life on Earth (the year 2018) during the machine up rising for the first time.

Movie Review: Night At the Museum – Battle of the Smithsonian

Poster

My Rating: 3Stars

This afternoon I saw the movie Night At the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian at AMC Theater, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

It was a typical performance by Ben Stiller that was nothing special. On the other hand his supporting casts were quite impressive, namely Hank Azaria, Amy Adams and Ricky Gervais. With Azaria carrying most of the movie by playing 3 characters.

Apple Media Tablet

Apple Tablet ConceptFor the past 8 years and may be as far back as the Apple Newton days, many including myself had speculated about Apple releasing a tablet computing/media device.

This device will not be a replacement of your notebook computer but to supplement the PC you already own.

Ever since the introduction of the iPhone and the mobile version of OS X, I had imagined Apple releasing something that sits as a conduet among the Apple TV, iPhone and the Macintosh PC.

This device will act as a remote interface to the Apple TV, able to bring up detials about the show or movie (ie. the type of content available from IMDB.com) you are watching. Able to receive and make calls via the iPhone, or conduct video conference. Able to leveravge the computing power of the Mac if one is available, to perform any computing that is too resource intensive for the Apple Media Tablet. You can imagine it being the view into the personal cloud created by the connected devices on the network.

Movie Review: Angels & Demons

Poster

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I saw the movie Angels & Demons at Grand Ocean Theater, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

This is a movie from the Dr. Langdon franchise, the first being the 2006 movie, The Da Vinci Code. There were very little references to the previous movie accept for the use of the same lead character, Dr. Robert Langdon, played by the Oscar winning Tom Hanks, and several references to Langdon’s activities against the Catholic church. As a result no requirements to watch the first movie for viewers to be able to enjoy this one. Like the first movie, this was also directed by the award winning director, Ron Howard. These factors may be the reasons behind why the movie was sold out at almost every cinemas in Hong Kong on Thursday (release day in Hong Kong), Friday and Saturday.

OS 10.5.7 is Safe for iPhone 3G

Pwnage Tool logoApple released the new OS X update 10.5.7 on Tuesday evening (US PST). When it was released most users with unlocked iPhone 3G were worry that the latest OS X update will further hamper their Mac’s ability to place the iPhone into DFU mode.

Now the iPhone Dev Team has tweeted yesterday that OS 10.5.7 is even more compatible to the jailbreak process than OS 10.5.6, which disabled the DFU mode.

The new 10.5.7 Leopard update is safe. In fact it’s more jailbreak-friendly than 10.5.6, since the DFU-mode bug is gone.

So I now recommend everyone to upgrade your Mac OS 10.5 as soon as possible, as there are many security fixes in OS 10.5.7, including a Safari 4 Beta security update that you only see after upgrading to OS 10.5.7.

Kutcher Ding-Donged Turner

After beating CNN (Ted Turner) to the 1 million follower mark on Twitter, Ashton Kutcher; or @aplusk as he is known on Twitter, this evening (US CST) pulled a guerilla marketing stunt in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, during a massive Tweetup in front of the CNN building.

Kutcher and his wife, Demi Moore @MrsKutcher, tweeted about the event and brought over 2000+ viewers to the live stream on UStream.tv.

Has this stunt achieve anything? Publicity for Ashton Kutcher? Publicity for Kutcher’s company Katalyst Films? Kutcher once explained the meaning of his handle “aplusk”, as “A+” is the highest rating at Katalyst. Did this bring any attention to Malaria Foundation International? Often the true intentions of guerilla marketing is hard to pin point. Sometimes it will have unexpected consequences and results.

Guerilla marketing is not a new concept but execution by celebrities like Kutcher is. Will more celebs adopt this approach? We will need more understanding law enforcements for that to happen.

How-to: Apply OS X Update 10.5.7

Everyone who are new and seasoned users of the Macintosh. Seeing that Apple had finally released the long anticipated OS 10.5.7 update. I want to once again reiterate the steps I normally take for applying OS X updates.

Before you start, if you’re using a notebook Mac, you should ensure the power adapter is plugged in (of course to the wall also).

Here are the steps I recommend my friends to follow:

  1. Ensure all your Apple applications; the ones that came with your Mac, are in their original locations, within the Applications and Utilities folders respectively.
  2. Start the Disk Utility application found in your Utilities folder, and perform the Repair Disk Permissions operation on your startup disk (aka. Boot Up drive); Continue reading “How-to: Apply OS X Update 10.5.7”

Movie Review: X-Men Origins – Wolverine

Poster

My Rating: 4Stars

This afternoon I saw the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine at Grand Theater, Elements, West Kowloon, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

There had been many prequels in the past, for example: Star Trek Zero, Batman Begins and Quantum of Solace. Aside from the first one the rest were all fairly good movies, and the Star Trek prequel is not yet released until June in Hong Kong and May for the USA.

I normally do not like prequel much, not sure why, may be it has to do with the fact that I rather move forward with the story rather than speculate what was.
